Use film clips to enhance teaching of global issues

by Kate Conway on March 30, 2012

Understanding the impacts of globalisation at both a global and local scale, for example on industry and employment and how it can be managed, are some of the toughest topics at GCSE and GCE. So how can you get students sitting in a classroom in the UK, to engage with issues facing someone else on the other side of the world?

One answer is to bring case studies to life by using film clips from Pumpkin Interactive's award winning catalogue of Geography DVD resources, so enabling students to really see the impacts of globalisation.

Watch interviews shot in Bangladesh with textile workers, factory managers, union leaders and government officials as well as footage filmed inside factories, to explore the pros and cons of the global fashion industry.

Or use film clips to compare the environmental impact of industrial development in different parts of the world. Residents in Dhaka's slums show how extreme industrial pollution is destroying their environment and health. While in the UK, a company sited in a national park explain how they are reducing their levels of pollution, waste and energy consumption.

Explore the rise of Superpower India through footage filmed in Bangalore – the call centre capital of the world. Business leaders, government officials and residents talk about the effect this growth is having on their city's transport system, environment, employment opportunities and housing.

Student activities, aimed at a range of abilities, and a wealth of background information are also included with all our DVDs – all written by specialist consultants - so you can see how to assimilate the film clips into your lesson plans.  And all our resources are available on a 14 day free preview.
