Praise from Alessi designer and Memphis co-founder for Pumpkin's latest DVD

by Kate Conway on June 11, 2012

If you're not sure whether Pumpkin's latest DVD title: "How Alessi, Memphis and Postmodernism changed the World" hits the mark - don't take it from us - ask one of the great designers of the postmodern era himself.

"I think Pumpkin has made a very clear, intelligent statement about an important and difficult subject which is often misunderstood and portrayed superficially.  Thank you for involving me and showing some of my work in a way which I appreciate."
George Sowden.

George Sowden is a co-founder of the Memphis Group and has collaborated with numerous individuals and world famous companies like Sottsass, Alessi, Olivetti and Bodum to name but a few.

"We were delighted when George Sowden agreed to take part in our educational resource on postmodernism," says Pumpkin director, Grant Davies.  "In terms of product design, he is one of the greats. He gave us amazing access to his Milan design studios and a fantastic insight into design during the 80's and 90's.  But with this access, also came a responsibility to ensure we understood and reflected accurately what this design era is all about - and considering the often diverse ideas, designs and innovations that developed during the postmodern era - that proved easier said than done."

The resource also includes interviews with Alberto Alessi and footage shot at the Alessi design studio, factory and museum near Milan.  We also spend time with postmodern designer and architect, Mendini and the curator of the V&A's postmodernism exhibition gives us a guided tour of the key pieces that defined the era.

This is a fantastic resource to contextualise the postmodern era and to provide a framework from which students can start researching their own design and make tasks.

This DVD is one of a pair of resources produced by Pumpkin that looks at different design eras.  Our second title: How Pop Art changed the world, explores the ideas, materials, colours and technologies adopted by Pop Art.  It then examines how Pop Art created new images, shapes and forms that continue to influence artists and designers today.
