Artaud: How can you bridge the gap between theory and practice

by Kate Conway on September 16, 2013

Teaching Artaud’s ideas and finding practical approaches for an examination course can prove challenging. Yet of all the major twentieth century theatre practitioners he is most likely to appeal to young people, both as a catalyst and a liberating force inspiring them to create their own high-scoring devised work.

So how can students learn most effectively the theory and practice of Artaud’s “Theatre of Curelty”?

Providing a high quality, readily accessible solution to this challenge was the starting point for our best-selling double DVD. Clips of original Artaud-inspired theatre productions are shown alongside extracts of his writing, allowing students to experience the link between theory and practice.

The extensive “library” of performance extracts provides a wealth of material for discussion and performance ideas for teachers with AS, A level and undergraduate students. And it is conveniently catalogued into topics like “Gesture” and the “Body and its double”.

Use our unique “Performance Generator” to provide over 100 Artaudian stimuli to challenge students to spontaneiously demonstrate their understanding and skill without lengthy discussion.

And students will be challenged to achieve their own high standards with our examples of top band student work which will exemplify how practitioner theory can be sucessfully applied effectively to their own work.

The 25 minute biography on Artaud graphically explains the evolution of his ideas and includes interviews with Professor Alan Read and Artaud’s biographer, Stephen Barber. Voice recordings of Artaud performing will bring the legend to life and aid understanding of the unique quality of his life and work.

“Artaud: Practical Approaches to a Theatre of Cruelty” contains over two hours of material and can be purchased for £75.00 + £2.50 P&P direct from Pumpkin:
