Pumpkin TV’s DVD Regenerating a City: the re-branding of Glasgow is a high quality, up-to-date, teacher-friendly resource that many busy Heads of Department and teachers will be able to quickly assimilate into their schemes of work/teaching programmes. It presents the redevelopment and rebranding of Glasgow from historical economic and social decline to its present-day renaissance and rebirth in crisp, succinct, ‘bite-size’ chapters.

The package is meant for use by students aged 13 and over. It will be useful for teachers of both key stages 3 and 4 geography and could certainly address elements of some units in several of the current AS/A-Level syllabi. The case study could easily be adapted for and incorporated into the teaching of Leisure and Tourism at both GCSE and GNVQ.

The DVD works equally well as a whole case study or when broken down into chapters. For example, it can deal with housing regeneration or the impact of economic change (a very contemporary issue). The package has clear graphics and maps and is well produced with a well- paced soundtrack.

The chapter structure of the DVD is a particular strength, allowing the teacher to select and easily replay the three–four minute segments. Another strong point is the activities menu. This provides a range of questions that could be used to focus student attention on the relevant section(s).

At 30 minutes long, the DVD can easily be planned into a lesson, allowing adequate time for student question and answer and general teacher exposition.

This resource would be a useful, flexible and up-to-date addition to geography departments around the country.

This DVD will be part of the core teaching on this topic. It helps to capture the essence of the place, in a way that will appeal to students. The flexibility is there once again, so that as a teacher you can dip in and out of the resource to meet your requirements in the classroom or show the DVD completely. The resource uses recent information and helps up date the geography DVD collection.
