Filmed in the honeypot site of Chamonix in the Alps, this resource looks at the social, economic and environmental opportunities and challenges facing the region. It explores the variety of activities in the area, including tourism, HEP and farming.  It examines their impact, the conflicts that arise between them and how they can be sustainably managed within the context of a fragile environment.  Examples of eco-tourism are provided and the risk from avalanches is assessed.

Testimonials

This resource featuring Chamonix provides an excellent example of the impacts of tourism in a countryside destination. It will provide useful case study support for the AS and A2 Travel and Tourism courses (WJEC specification). The interviews with local stakeholders are engaging and informative."

An excellent purchase with stunning visual material. Extremely useful for KS4 case study material on glaciation, fold mountains and tourism.

As a user of previous Pumpkin DVDs I was interested to see how this new crop of Pumpkin Interactive films would compare. Production values are high and the film has been well received by students. The addition of ice and climate change into the 2014 national curriculum for key stage 3 may provoke additional interest in this DVD for those who are unfamiliar with these topics.

There are exciting sequences of winter sports and interesting interviews which bring the town and its challenges to life. A familiar tale of tourist and environmental management is told well, with the wow factor of the Sky Walk. There is a nice pace and structure to the story being told and I shall be using this film with Year 7 students.

As with all Pumpkin products, extensive notes and student activities are provided. These are provided in PDF and Word format, so can be edited and repurposed for school use.

A great documentary about Chamonix and the challenges associated with responsible tourism and sustainable development in a mountain destination.
