Using the international fashion industry as a case study this resource asks: what is globalisation, what are the causes, and what is the role played by TNCs? It then looks at the effects of globalisation and asks what are the pros and cons and who benefits? Filmed in Bangladesh, it compares the working and living conditions of textile workers employed in large scale factories in Dhaka, with those employed by a small rural fair trade fashion initiative.

An engaging resource that will provoke much thought and discussion.

Testimonials

“The increasing globalisation of industry through trans-nationals is clearly explained. The contrast with the local fair trade manufacturer is very enlightening.”

John Belfield, former Head of Geography

Trish West, Geography Department, The Redmaids' School, Bristol

A hugely beneficial resource for Geography departments to engage their students and to provide them with exciting, visual and up to date case study materials. We have used How Fair is Fashion with Year 8 at the end of the year to challenge their ideas on the fashion industry

Alan Parkinson, secondary curriculum development leader, Geographical Association

This DVD explores the impact of Globalisation on the fashion industry by focusing on the changing fortunes of workers in Bangladeshi factories completing contracts for TNCs. Low wages and poor working conditions are changing over time as consumers in the UK become aware of their role in global trade. This video explores the real cost of fashion and will help students explore the impact of their decisions as consumers on the lives of other young people in Bangladesh.

The programme is split into themed chapters which can provide a structure to the lesson and prompts for discussion. The useful selection of resources, written by experienced author Bob Digby, completes the package.

I think this resource would be best for GCSE and there are some suitable A level themes too, particularly the link with Globalisation and the work of TNCs.
